DONNA ALMAND
Officially “Spring Has Sprung,” but somehow the weather is not cooperating. I hope everyone is staying warm these last few days. Since the weather has us bundled up inside, I would like to suggest that you cuddle up with a book and read, and when the weather gets nice take a book to read outside or to the beach. The United Women of Faith have a reading program whose purpose is to expand understanding and participation in God’s mission. Our reading program is open to our community… all adults, youth and children. Through this reading program, we can all become more aware of the critical issues facing humanity today.
Unfortunately, our collection of books for this program has been lost due to the tornado, but we are in the process of replenishing our inventory. The books we do have will be stored in the Prayer Room at Christ United Methodist Church. Stop by during the week or after church and just sign out the books on the honor system checkout list and return them when you are finished. Don’t let our inventory keep you from reading. Most of the recommended books are available in our public libraries (both hard copy and electronically), independent books stores, and at Amazon.
Ideally, we would like you to complete a reading plan, where you read one or more books per suggested categories, but if you don’t choose to do the program then just read what program books you can. The reporting form for the books you read is available in the church office. Also, in the church office there is a take-home list of the books suggested for the 2023 reading year. Books from 2018-2023 reading catalogs are eligible to read for this years program too. A list per category for the years 2018-2023 will be available in the church office for you to view. These lists include captivating novels, heartfelt biographies, and books that address urgent messages about current issues.
Besides books, there are three movies and podcasts that you can watch and listen to for credit toward the reading program. The movies are Hidden Figures, The Hate U Give, and Pushout. Listening to two podcasts from Faith Talks will give you a book credit too. So you see, there is something for everyone!
This years reading program ends August 1 so grab a book and get started. Remember, reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.
